WATCH: Kiernan Shipka is a Teenage Witch in the First Trailer for 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'
The teaser trailer for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was released yesterday (September 13), and it couldn't be more different from the breezy 1990s sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart.
First off, Kiernan Shipka (who played the Drapers' daughter Sally in Mad Men) takes on the role of Sabrina, the half-witch, half-mortal teen seen in the teaser (below) blowing out candles on her 16th birthday cake to a breathy rendition of "Happy Birthday."
Then there's its chilling tone, replete with spell chanting, candles and pentagrams. This interpretation of the Archie Comics character looks like it has more in common with Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist than the chirpy comedy that won our hearts.
And if you ask us, there's a distinctly True Detective season one vibe too. Watch and see for yourself:

The series opens in the town of Greendale in the days leading up to Sabrina's 16th birthday. Instead of celebrating and getting the keys to a new car like most sweet sixteens, Sabrina must decide her future, and choose between a human life and a witch's one.
"She's this young, really badass, outspoken girl," Kiernan told Entertainment Weekly yesterday (September 13), "who is still individuating herself and figuring out love, as well as honing in on her power and struggling between these two completely separate worlds."
Helping her are her aunts Zelda (Lord of the Rings' Miranda Otto) and Hilda (The Office and Wonder Woman star Lucy Davis), her boyfriend, Harvey (My Friend Dahmer's Ross Lynch), her school friends, and what looks like a horned devil-like creature. Oh, and some skeleton friends.
We didn't spot Michelle "Missy" Gomez, who plays Sabrina's favorite teacher and her alter ego Madam Satan, but we did spy Sabrina's talking cat Salem right at the end. He looks a little more lifelike than his rubber animatronic predecessor.
"We're not remaking Sabrina, The Teenage Witch," Lucy Davis is quoted as saying. "This is a different thing."
You're telling us, Lucy. Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina starts streaming on October 26, just in time for Halloween.
