This is not a drill: Matthew Macfadyen is joining the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).

Deadline brings news that the Emmy-winning actor has signed up for a role in Deadpool 3, the latest installment in the Ryan Reynolds-led superhero franchise. There is no word yet on who Macfadyen is playing, but we probably shouldn't presume that he has been cast as an archetypal British baddie. After all, fellow Brit Emma Corrin joined the cast last month and is rumored to be portraying a villain.

Deadpool 3, due in theaters in 2024, will also feature Hugh Jackman as Logan a.k.a. Wolverine. It's being directed by Shawn Levy, who previously worked with Reynolds on 2021's Free Guy with Jodie Comer.

Macfadyen is coming off Emmy and BAFTA wins for his performance as social climber Tom Wambsgans in Succession, which returned for its fourth and final season last weekend. His other recent roles include portraying Major Charles Ingram – a military veteran accused of cheating on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? – in the AMC miniseries Quiz.
