WATCH: Andrew Scott, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda Star in New 'His Dark Materials' Trailer
A new trailer for season two of His Dark Materials has been released, and it suggests that BBC One and HBO's fantasy series is about to turn even darker.
Andrew Scott, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda all feature prominently in the new trailer, alongside the show's young stars Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson.
Season two is based on the second book in Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series, The Subtle Knife, which was originally published in 1997. The season's official synopsis teases: “Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) has opened a bridge to a new world, and, distraught over the death of her best friend, Lyra (Keen) follows Asriel into the unknown.
"In a strange and mysterious abandoned city she meets Will (Wilson), a boy from our world who is also running from a troubled past. Lyra and Will learn their destinies are tied to reuniting Will with his father but find their path is constantly thwarted as a war begins to brew around them. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter (Wilson) searches for Lyra, determined to bring her home by any means necessary."

Earlier this summer Scott revealed that he will reunite with old friend Phoebe Waller-Bridge in season two of His Dark Materials. The Fleabag creator and Killing Eve executive producer has signed up for a small voice role as the dæmon of Scott’s character, Colonel John Parry.
“What’s beautiful to me about the books is the relationship with the dæmons and, I think this is the first time we are revealing this, but my dæmon is going to be played by someone who is very close to me in my real life: a young performer and writer called Phoebe Waller-Bridge,” Scott said during a Comic-Con@Home panel.
His Dark Materials is due to return later this year, with the new season an episode shorter than planned – seven instead of eight – due to coronavirus.
