Pop Culture Pulse: From Matthew Goode’s Witchy Return to Stanley Tucci Seeking Buried Treasure

Happy New Year! Don't worry if you overdid things during the holidays: there's plenty to unwind with in our guide to the month's TV, movie, and music highlights.
1. A DOCTOR WHO ADVENTURE FEATURING ICONIC VILLAINS
Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks
The show's New Year's Day Special sees the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), Dan (John Bishop), and Yaz (Mandip Gill) take on those legendary foes, the Daleks. According to Bishop, it's an episode involving a time loop, which means "the problem that we face is that every time there’s a potential to interrupt them, we get caught by them and get exterminated and have to start again." Guest stars Aisling Bea (This Way Up), Pauline McLynn (Father Ted), and Adjani Salmon (Dreaming Whilst Black) add to a fab package.

Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks premieres Saturday, January 1 on BBC America and AMC+.
2. A SPOOKY CONCLUSION TO AN ADDICTING SERIES
A Discovery of Witches
Based on Deborah Harkness' All Souls Trilogy, this hit fantasy series takes place in a world where witches and vampires have been suspicious of each other for centuries. Season three (the final one) follows unlikely allies Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), a witch, and Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), a vampire, as they return from 1590 to the present day and face up to what they left behind. They're joined by a fine supporting cast that includes Doctor Who fave Alex Kingston and Killing Eve’s Edward Bluemel.

A Discovery of Witches premieres Saturday, January 8 on Sundance Now, Shudder, and AMC+.
3. AN ADVENTURE SERIES ABOUT BURIED TREASURE
La Fortuna
This gripping six-parter is the first ever TV series from revered director Alejandro Amenábar (The Others, Butterfly's Tongue). Adapted from a popular graphic novel, it follows diplomat Álex Ventura (Álvaro Mel) as he embarks on a treacherous mission to recover sunken treasure plundered by sea-faring adventurer Frank Wild (Stanley Tucci). The first two episodes stream immediately, with episodes premiering weekly from then on, so expect to be grabbed hook, line, and sinker from the start.

La Fortuna premieres Thursday, January 20 on AMC+.
4. AN INDIE FLICK LIKE NO OTHER
Sundown
This pitch-black comedy movie has a pretty unique premise. When Neil (Tim Roth) learns that his wife has died, he decides not to cut short his fancy vacation in Mexico – instead, he pretends to have lost his passport so he can't fly home for the funeral. Two weeks later, his sister Alice (Charlotte Rampling) finds him enjoying life in Acapulco with a new, much younger girlfriend. Roth is earning rave reviews for his performance in a film that sounds like very intriguing viewing.

Sundown opens in select theaters Friday, January 28.
5. A TV MOVIE THAT WILL MAKE YOU THINK
Help
This heartrending TV movie written by Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, National Treasure) explores the impact of Covid-19 on the U.K.'s care home sector. Killing Eve's Jodie Comer stars as Sarah, a young healthcare worker from Liverpool who bonds with Tony (Stephen Graham), a middle-aged patient who has early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Featuring a seriously impressive 20-minute one-shot scene led by Comer, Help is a powerful, painful, and very thought-provoking watch.

Help premieres Monday, December 31 on Acorn TV.
6. A COMPLETELY ADDICTIVE BRITISH CRIME SERIES
FKA Twigs: Capri Sun

As FKA Twigs, British singer-songwriter Tahliah Barnett has made some of the most atmospheric and ethereal electro-R&B music of the past decade. (Her song "Two Weeks" was memorably used in an episode of Mr. Robot.) Her new mixtape Capri Sun is being trailed by "Tears in the Club," a stellar duet with The Weeknd that's perhaps her most radio-friendly moment to date. Does this mean Capri Sun will be equally mainstream-leaning? Either way, it's bound to contain some serious ear candy.

Capri Sun drops Friday, January 14 via Young Turks.
7. A DETECTIVE SERIES THAT WILL REALLY KEEP YOU GUESSING
Queens of Mystery
If you love British detective series like Midsomer Murders and Rosemary & Thyme, you'll want to bookmark this Acorn TV original. Set in the picturesque English region of Wildemarsh, it follows a trio of crime-writing sisters (Julie Graham, Siobhan Redmond, and Sarah Woodward) as they solve murders with their niece (Florence Hall), a local police officer. This second season consists of three two-part mysteries premiering on consecutive Mondays, so it should add a dash of drama to the start of your week.

Queens of Mystery premieres Monday, January 10 on Acorn TV.
8. AN ELECTRO-POP ALBUM ROOTED IN ESCAPISM
Years & Years: Night Call
Years & Years
is the music project of singer/actor Olly Alexander, who starred in Russell T Davies' acclaimed miniseries It's a Sin. Alexander says he wrote this third album "from a fantastical space" while "stuck in the same four walls" during lockdown, and "wanted to have as much pleasure as possible" in his songs. If the shimmering singles "Crave" and "Starstruck" are anything to go by, he's definitely succeeded in making pop music with sparkle, heart, and an authentic queer sensibility.

Night Call is released Friday, January 21 via Interscope.
9. A MUSICAL MOVIE YOU PROBABLY WEREN’T EXPECTING
Cyrano
Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice), this movie reimagines Edmond Rostand’s classic play Cyrano de Bergerac as a big-hearted musical. As a veteran of Broadway as well as Game of ThronesPeter Dinklage seems perfectly cast as the iconic title character, a romantic hero who's convinced that his physical appearance makes him unworthy of the woman he loves, Roxanne (Haley Bennett). Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Ben Mendelsohn are among the talented supporting cast.

Cyrano opens in theaters Friday, January 21.
10. A SLASHER MOVIE TO MAKE YOU… SCREAM
Scream
Unlike Ghostface's victims, the Scream franchise never seems to die. This fifth movie is the first not to be helmed by Wes Craven, who passed away in 2015, so Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Devil's Due) take over the director's chair. There's also a raft of new cast members led by Melissa Barrera and Mason Gooding, but if you're hoping to see more of Scream legends Gail Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), you won't be disappointed. Come on, how can you resist?

Scream opens in theaters Friday, January 14.
