Back in 2018 it was announced Eddie Redmayne had signed on for a role in The Good Nurse. Now that we’re halfway through 2022, it’s happening.
Redmayne is set to star opposite Jessica Chastain in the forthcoming true crime thriller, heading to Netflix. The series is based on Charles Graeber’s 2013 book The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder.
The story, which is based on true events, revolves around a nurse named Charles Cullen (Redmayne), who killed “dozens, if not hundreds, of his patients.” Chastain plays his friend, Amy Loughren, who outs him for what he is… a serial killer.
According to Vanity Fair, “Over his 16-year career as a nurse, Cullen worked at nine hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, killing patients by administering lethal doses of insulin and other drugs."
Filmmaker Tobias Lindholm, who is bringing the story to screen, talks about what attracted him to this project. In the same Vanity Fair article, he says, “When I read the book, I realized that it wasn’t just another serial-killer movie. It was a portrayal of a system that didn’t stop the serial killer, and the nurse who did.”
We were just talking about true crime yesterday, and the public’s fascination with the genre, and Chastain has some thoughts on the matter as well, saying, “There have been a lot of shows and movies about true-crime events that I find could be a bit vulgar—there’s a sensationalism of violence and of aggression.”
She goes onto explain her motivation in taking on this character, saying, “I wanted to acknowledge someone like Amy. She’s the kind of superhero that I want to celebrate, because they’re everywhere.”
Redmayne chimed in, providing his perspective on the story: “From an actor’s point of view, [it was about] trying to interrogate why—why this person did what he did, with the acknowledgement that you were never going to find that answer. But the interrogation of it was pretty intriguing.”
It’s really interesting to hear their thought process on tackling true crime.
And, just as interesting, here is a look at both in character (and looking exhausted):
The Good Nurse is set to premiere fall of this year.
