Casting News: Idris Elba to Return to Sci-Fi in 'Deeper'

Idris Elba could be about to dive into another juicy role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the super-prolific actor is in talks to lead Deeper, a supernatural sci-fi thriller from Everest and Adrift director Baltasar Kormákur.

Elba would play an astronaut with a tarnished reputation who encounters a "sinister and dangerous force" while overseeing a deep-sea dive into a newly discovered trench. The film's script has been written by Chronicle and American Ultra scribe Max Landis, and was reportedly purchased by MGM for a seven-figure sum.

Both Bradley Cooper and Gal Gadot were previously linked to the role now earmarked for Elba. Deeper would become his first excursion into the sci-fi genre since 2017's The Dark Tower and 2016's Star Trek Beyond. No other actors are currently attached to the project.

As ever, Elba's work schedule is pretty packed: he's recently been shooting Cats, the Andrew Lloyd Webber adaptation also starring Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, and James Corden, and he's due to DJ at the Coachella music festival in April.

Meanwhile, his DJ-centered Netflix series Turn Up Charlie – which he co-created, and stars in as a DJ rather less successful than he is in real-life – is due to debut in March.
