Casting News: Idris Elba Replaces Will Smith in 'Suicide Squad' Sequel

Can Idris Elba's schedule get any more packed? Well, apparently it can, because he's joining the cast of the Suicide Squad sequel!

According to Variety, the Brit has been cast as Deadshot, the role originated in the first Suicide Squad movie by Will Smith. Smith had to pull out of the sequel in February due to scheduling conflicts, so Elba is essentially a super-sub.

No other casting for the sequel has been confirmed, though Margot Robbie is believed to be reprising her role as badass supervillain Harley Quinn.

Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn is on board to write and direct the sequel, which has a release date of August 6, 2021. On Twitter, news of the Brit's casting has been warmly received.

Of course, we have plenty of opportunities to see Elba on screen before then. He's due to make his debut as a Saturday Night Live host this Saturday (March 9); then his new DJ-centered comedy, Turn Up Charlie, debuts March 15 on Netflix. In the eight-episode series, which he co-created, Elba plays a struggling DJ who's given one last shot at success when he becomes a 'Manny' to a famous friend's badly-behaved daughter.

Elba's next film on the release slates is Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw, whose latest trailer he narrates.

He's also confirmed for upcoming sci-fi film Deeper and the big screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, in which he's playing Macavity. At some point in the near future, we hope, he'll get to take a week off!
