Writer's Room: New Face in Five Points
Series writer Kevin Deiboldt offers insight into the character of General Brendan Donovan, played by 'Copper' newcomer Donal Logue.
BBCAmerica.com: Excited to have Donal Logue join the cast this year?
Kevin Deiboldt: This will probably sound like a promotional cliché – but when we first started conceiving the character last year, Donal's name was the first to come up. So, we're thrilled to have Donal join our cast. The man is a ridiculously talented actor (and he sports quite the impressive beard). Always good to have competition for Morehouse in the "best beard" category.
Without getting too spoilery, could you give some background on Donal's character?
Donovan worked his way up from the streets of Five Points to become its most powerful man – Boss of the Sixth Ward. He's just returned from a stint serving as brigadier general in the Union Army and provides Copper's first peek into the political machine of New York City.
How much character history do you create before writing someone new into the story?
Quite a bit. It's always helpful to flesh out the background of a character to ensure everybody is on the same page. Tom Kelly (joining us as an EP this season) drafted a fairly extensive document about Donovan that was particularly helpful. In terms of a character's voice, however, you don't really get a sense of that until they're in the scripts.
Do you think Sons of Anarchy fans will be drawn into the Coppersphere?
Characters with fierce loyalties and questionable morals; glimpses into the seedy underbelly of society; big, burly men with interesting facial hair. Sounds like a match made in heaven. (For the record, I'm also a huge fan of Donal's work on the short-lived, criminally-underrated series Terriers.)
Can viewers expect some tension between General Donovan and Detective Corcoran?
Hm. I wouldn't say there's tension between them – it's more about how the entrance of a powerful new figure like Donovan (who used to be a copper himself) ends up affecting Corcoran's world.
