WATCH: Sir Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman Star in Powerful Trailer for 'The Father'
The first trailer for Oscar-tipped drama The Father has arrived, giving us a taste of Sir Anthony Hopkins' harrowing performance as an elderly man who is gradually slipping into dementia.
Olivia Colman co-stars as his daughter in the upcoming movie, which earned rave reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The trailer also gives us a glimpse of supporting characters played by Mark Gatiss, Rufus Sewell, Olivia Williams, and Imogen Poots, and cleverly hints at the way Hopkins' character may be losing his grip on reality.
Along with the trailer, it's been announced that The Father will open December 18 in theaters in New York City and L.A. before getting a wider release Christmas Day. It will then open in the U.K. on January 8, 2021. This puts it firmly within Hollywood's annual awards season. Both Hopkins and Colman are already Academy Award winners, for Silence of the Lambs and The Favourite respectively.
The Father is directed by Florian Zeller, who adapted it from his award-winning stage play Le Père.

Continuing his recent purple patch, Hopkins has recently signed up to star as Holocaust hero Sir Nicholas Winton in the movie One Life. Colman will next be seen as Queen Elizabeth II in season four of The Crown, which is expected to premiere in November.
