As its title suggests, new British thriller series The Undeclared War is about a different kind of threat to national security – namely, a cyber attack.
The trailer for the six-part series introduces us to some incredibly high-stakes drama at GCHQ, the U.K.'s Government Communications Headquarters. Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance play two of the senior employees working there: Pegg's character is integral to the operation, while Rylance's is more of an outlier.
Newcomer Hannah Khalique-Brown stars as Saara Parvin, an intern who discovers that Russian cyber agents are launching a major, multi-layered attack on the U.K.'s computer systems. Adrian Lester portrays fictional British Prime Minister Andrew Makinde, while the supporting cast includes Whitstable Pearl star Kerry Godliman and The Crown's Alex Jennings.
The Undeclared War is set to premiere August 18 on Peacock. According to Collider, the series' writer Peter Kominsky has said he conceived the series as more than pure entertainment.
“The Undeclared War has been many years in the making," Kominsky said in a statement. "It imagines how the next few years might play out in the domain of cyber warfare – a battle unseen by the public but with potentially devastating consequences.
"In my work, I’ve tried to shine a light on aspects of public policy which affect us all but where the details of what is taking place, often behind the scenes, are not well understood. I hope this drama will give audiences an insight into a world certain to impact our lives significantly in the years ahead."
Color us very, very intrigued. And maybe a little scared.
