WATCH: 'Sherlock' Star Martin Freeman in Trailer for Mossad Spy Thriller 'The Operative'

Sherlock and The Hobbit star Martin Freeman promises to "handle it" in the just-released trailer for his upcoming movie The Operative.

Freeman stars as Thomas, a handler for the Mossad, Israel's national intelligence agency. As the trailer shows, he makes the decision to send his agent Rachel (Diane Kruger) to Tehran to infiltrate Iran's nuclear program while posing as an English and French teacher.

But when Rachel seemingly disappears while attending her father’s funeral in London, Mossad bosses become concerned that she may have gone rogue. Thomas has to travel from Germany to Tehran to track Rachel down and potentially protect her.

It's a super-tense situation, but if the trailer is anything to go by, Freeman is playing a character who definitely knows how to keep a cool head.

The Operative is based on the acclaimed 2016 novel The English Teacher by Yiftach Reicher Ati, a former real-life military intelligence officer. It's written and directed by Yuval Adler (Bethlehem, Shooter) and opens in theaters August 2.

Meanwhile, fans of Freeman's breakthrough role opposite Ricky Gervais in the original U.K. version of The Office will be pleased to hear he's returning to TV comedy in Breeders, a 10-part series about the challenges of being a parent. It co-stars Episodes' Daisy Haggard and is due to premiere on FX in 2020.
