WATCH: Martin Freeman is On a Life or Death Journey in New 'Cargo' Trailer

Martin Freeman landed the role of a lifetime when he was cast as Bilbo Baggins in 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Once again, he's portraying a character on a mission... but, of a very different sort.

He's set to star in the post-apocalyptic Netflix original feature Cargo, which premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival this month. The movie is based in rural Australia and tells the story of a devastating pandemic that turns those infected into the living dead.

In the new trailer for the film, we see that Freeman's character, Andy, has fallen victim to a life-changing bite. He has 48 hours before he turns, but in addition to the looming zombification, there is one wee problem... well, actually, a very large problem... he is carrying precious cargo and is in search of refuge for his infant daughter.

A young woman says to Andy in the trailer, "I just want things to go back to normal," and he responds, "I don't think normal is on the horizon." Well, that's an understatement, but he doesn't give up hope:

The feature film is based on a short written by Yolanda Ramke and directed by Ben Howling. Ramke wrote the screenplay for the full-length version and also co-directed with Howling.

The film will be available to stream on Netflix from May 18.

Is there room on your watch list for another zombie thriller?
