Kris Marshall's DI Humphrey Goodman is back in the first trailer for Beyond Paradise, the eagerly anticipated Death in Paradise spin-off series.
The BBC's teaser shows him arriving in Shipton Abbott, the (fictional) town in Southwest England where his fiancée Martha (Sally Bretton) was born. A local man greets Marshall's police officer by saying: "You're the new fella at Shipton station that everyone's talking about." He then delivers the community's slightly wary first impression of Humphrey: "A bit odd."
It also hints at trouble to come, with Humphrey saying: "I just prefer good old-fashioned policing. Everything is not quite what it seems."
Marshall starred in Death in Paradise, which is set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, for four seasons before departing in 2017. His exit storyline saw Humphrey leave the Caribbean so he could commit fully to his on-off romance with Martha in London.
Co-created by Death in Paradise creator Robert Thorogood and Tony Jordan (Life on Mars, EastEnders), Beyond Paradise reunites Humphrey and Martha alongside a host of new characters. Zahra Ahmadi (Innocent, Doctor Who) and Dylan Llewellyn (Derry Girls, Big Boys) are playing police officers, named DS Esther Williams and PC Kelby Hartford respectively, while Felicity Montagu (Nighty Night, Alan Partridge) is portraying a civilian support person called Margo Martins.
In addition, Barbara Flynn (Killing Eve, Doctor Who) is playing Martha's mother, Anne, whom the couple moves in with when they relocate to Shipton Abbott. Beyond Paradise will premiere in the U.K. on BBC One on February 24. In the U.S., it will be available on BritBox at a date to be confirmed.
