The first trailer for Ridley Scott's historical drama movie The Last Duel is here, and it shows Jodie Comer taking center stage.
Based on Eric Jager's 2004 book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France, the movie tells the story of the last officially recognized judicial duel fought in France. Comer stars as Marguerite de Carrouges, a woman who accuses her husband's best friend, Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), of sexual assault.
Le Gris denies this incredibly serious accusation, prompting Marguerite's husband Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) to challenge him to a duel with the highest possible stakes. Whichever man ends the duel alive will be viewed as "right" in God's eyes, and if de Carrouges loses, his wife will be burned at the stake as punishment for what will then be deemed a "false accusation."
The trailer also includes a glimpse of Ben Affleck, who co-wrote the screenplay with Damon and Nicole Holofcener (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), and Comer's Killing Eve castmate Harriet Walter.
The Last Duel is due in theaters October 15. In the meantime, you can catch Comer in the sci-fi comedy movie Free Guy, which co-stars Ryan Reynolds and arrives in theaters August 13. And while we await the fourth and final season of BBC America's Killing Eve, you can catch up with episodes from the first three seasons here.
