Lady Chatterley's Lover is a famously erotic novel, and the trailer for the new movie adaptation certainly seems to capture its slightly scandalous appeal.
Emma Corrin stars as Lady Chatterley, an upper-class woman who begins an extramarital affair with Oliver Mellors, played by Jack O'Connell, a gamekeeper on her husband's grand country estate. Not only is Lady Chatterley cheating on her husband, Sir Clifford Chatterley (Matthew Duckett), but she's also crossing the class divide at a time in British history when social hierarchies were much more entrenched.
When the original novel by D.H. Lawrence was first published in 1929, it was banned for obscenity in several countries including the United States, Canada and Australia. So in a way, the new movie has quite a lot to live up to.
It's directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre from a script by David Magee, who previously wrote Mary Poppins Returns and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. The cast also includes Joely Richardson, which is a neat "full circle" moment, since she previously starred in a 1993 BBC TV adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Lover.
The new movie arrives on Netflix on December 2, making it well-timed to warm up the cold winter nights.
