WATCH: Dev Patel, Peter Capaldi, and Tilda Swinton in First Trailer for 'The Personal History of David Copperfield'

The first trailer for Armando Iannucci's The Personal History of David Copperfield has arrived, and it definitely offers a glimpse of the movie's warm and witty tone.

Dev Patel stars as David Copperfield, an aspiring writer who meets a range of strange and hilarious characters while navigating his way through Victorian England. He's one of Charles Dickens' most beloved characters, and widely thought to be based on the author himself.

Doctor Who alumnus Peter Capaldi co-stars as the eternally optimistic Mr. Micawber; Tilda Swinton portrays Copperfield's formidable great-aunt, Betsey Trotwood; and Hugh Laurie appears as kind-hearted Mr. Dick.

The movie's awesome ensemble cast also includes Ben Whishaw as Uriah Heep, Gwendoline Christie, Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Sophie McShera (Downton Abbey), Daisy May Cooper, (This Country), and Nikki Amuka-Bird (Torchwood).

You'll spot nearly all of them in the trailer if you pay close attention...

Veep creator Armando Iannucci directs The Personal History of David Copperfield from a script co-written with his longtime collaborator Simon Blackwell based on Dickens's 1850 novel. David Copperfield has been adapted for film and TV numerous times over the years, including into a two-part BBC drama in 1999 in which a young Daniel Radcliffe played the title character as a child.

The Personal History of David Copperfield opens in the U.K on January 10, 2020, but the U.S. release date hasn't been announced yet. Let's hope it isn't too far behind the U.K. date, because this movie looks like it could be a perfect "winter warmer."
