Colin Farrell gave a charming and emotional speech at last night's Golden Globe Awards after winning the Best Actor – Musical or Comedy prize for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin.

The movie reunites Farrell with his In Bruges director Martin McDonagh and castmate Brendan Gleeson, a career breakthrough he acknowledged playfully. "Martin McDonagh, I owe you so much man," the 46-year-old actor said from the podium. "Fourteen years ago, you put me working with Brendan Gleeson… and you changed the trajectory of my life forever in ways that I, begrudgingly, will be grateful to you for the rest of my days."

He also lavished praise on Gleeson, who was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category. "Brendan, I love you so much. I love you so much," he said as he looked at his co-star in the audience. "To get to cohabitate this creative space with you every day, all I did when I came to work every day was aspire to be your equal. I'm not saying I even got there, but the aspiration kept me going."

Farrell went on to thank fellow co-star Kerry Condon and jokingly scold Barry Keoghan for eating his Crunchy Nut Cornflakes while they were living together during the shoot. On Twitter, the speech was widely praised for its authenticity and emotional openness. One fan said it left toxic masculinity "found dead in a ditch"  – you can watch it here

Other winners at last night's Golden Globe Awards included Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Cate Blanchett for Tár, Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Austin Butler for Elvis.

In the TV categories, winners included Jennifer Coolidge for The White Lotus: Sicily, Zendaya for Euphoria, and Jeremy Allen White for The Bear. Better Call Saul's Bob Odenkirk was nominated for Best Actor – Television Series Drama, but lost out to Yellowstone's Kevin Costner
