8 True Crime Series That Will Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat

There's nothing quite like a true crime series to keep you on the edge of your seat. Here are eight brilliant ones, a mix of gripping dramas and insightful docuseries, that you can find on AMC+, Acorn TV, and Sundance Now. Enjoy!

1. Manhunt

Doc Martin's Martin Clunes stars in this true crime drama streaming on Acorn TV. Season one follows his character, Met Police officer DCI Colin Sutton, as he investigates the murder of a French student in an affluent London neighborhood. Then season two tracks Sutton's quest to track down a serial rapist who operated in the U.K. capital for at least 17 years. Both stories are super-bingeable.

2. The Real Manhunter

After Manhunt, you can also watch this docuseries featuring recollections from the real Colin Sutton on Acorn TV. Each episode tells the story of a fascinating and particularly tricky case he worked on during his 35-year career. It's an incredible insight not just into the criminal psyche, but also into the methods detectives use to get one step ahead.

3. The Preppy Murder: Death in Central Park

Available on AMC+, this docuseries re-examines a high-profile homicide from the decade of excess – namely, the murder of 18-year-old Jennifer Levin in Central Park in August 1986. It's a particularly chilling watch because it explores the way society at the time was reluctant to condemn her murderer, Robert Chambers a.k.a. "the preppy killer," because he didn't look or act like a "typical criminal."

4. Des

David Tennant is absolutely chilling in this three-part miniseries available on AMC+ and Sundance Now. He won an International Emmy for his performance as Dennis Nilsen, a Scottish serial killer who murdered at least 12 young men between 1978 and 1983 in London. Daniel Mays co-stars as DCI Peter Jay, the officer who had the difficult task of getting Nilsen to name his victims.

5. Litvinenko

Tennant delivers another dazzling performance in this poignant four-parter. He plays Alexander Litvinenko, a former KGB officer who died from Polonium-210 poisoning in 2006. Before his passing, Litvinenko claimed to have been killed on the orders of Vladimir Putin, triggering an incredibly delicate U.K. police investigation. This series premiered just last month on AMC+ and Sundance Now.

6. True Crime Story: It Couldn't Happen Here

If you can't resist a true crime docuseries, this Sundance Now original is one to bookmark. Each episode follows host-advocate Hilarie Burton Morgan as she explores a murder in a different American small town. It's not just the crime itself that she spotlights, but the shockwaves that these senseless tragedies send through close-knit local communities.

7. No One Saw a Thing

On July 10, 1981, Ken McElroy of Skidmore, Missouri – a repeat offender who was known as "the town bully" – was shot dead in front of almost 60 onlookers. To this day, no one has been convicted of his murder, so this docuseries available on AMC+ digs deep to find out what really happened and the reasons for an apparent town-wide pact of silence.

8. Conviction: The Case of Stephen Lawrence

This three-parter follows grieving parents Doreen and Neville Lawrence (Sharlene Whyte and Hugh Quarshie) as they pursue justice for their son, Stephen, a Black British teenager murdered in London in 1993. Steve Coogan co-stars as DCI Clive Driscoll, an officer trying to right the wrongs of the Met Police, who were accused of systemic racism during the initial investigation. It's available on Acorn TV.
