Tributes Paid to Dame Olivia Newton-John Following Her Death at Age 73

Grease star Dame Olivia Newton-John touched a lot of people in her life, an impact reflected in the many, many tributes shared since her death was announced yesterday (August 8).
The singer and actress' family shared the sad news in an Instagram post, writing: "Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends." 
In the post, her family hailed her as "a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer." Newton-John revealed in 2017 that her breast cancer, with which she was first diagnosed in 1992, had returned and spread to other parts of her body.
Born in England and raised in Australia, Newton-John launched a prominent singing career in the 1970s, scoring hits with country-pop songs including "I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow."
In 1978, she added acting to her résumé in a major way by starring in Grease, the enormously successful movie version of a popular stage musical. She played Sandy Olsson, a straitlaced high school student who taps into her wilder side after falling for fellow student Danny Zuko (John Travolta).
Travolta has led the tributes to his co-star, writing in an Instagram post: "My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!"

Another Grease co-star, Stockard Channing, also shared a statement celebrating Newton-John's life. "I don't know if I've known a lovelier human being," she told People. "Olivia was the essence of summer – her sunniness, her warmth and her grace are what always come to mind when I think of her."
Leslie Jordan, her castmate in the 2000 film Sordid Lives, wrote on Instagram: "Olivia Newton-John courageously fought death but I prefer to remember the way she lived. She made a big impact within the arts and even bigger impact on her fans, friends and family around the world." 
Newton-John's other movies included 1980's cult fantasy musical Xanadu and 1983's crime comedy Two of a Kind, which also co-starred Travolta. Her hit singles included 1981's "Physical," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks. In recent years, she also became known as a prominent campaigner and fundraiser for cancer research. 
In 2020, she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for services to charity, cancer research, and entertainment She is survived by family members including her husband John and daughter Chloe.
