Patricia Highsmith's literary character Tom Ripley made it to American screens in the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon in the title role.

We'll be getting more of the sociopath and his wicked ways in weekly TV installments, reports Deadline. Steve Zaillian (The Night Of) is set to write and direct the series, covering all five of Highsmith's books revolving around Ripley. The forthcoming project has yet to be given a title.

The character starts off as an awkward guy who is seeking acceptance from a more affluent crowd. But as the stories progress, he goes from "a low-level con artist to full-fledged serial killer."

The book series consists of: The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley Underground, Ripley's Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley, and Ripley Underwater.

In 1960 there was a French film adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley called Purple Noon. But the more mainstream film, released in 1999, was made up of an all-star cast, including Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cate Blanchett and Jack Davenport.

It will be hard to match a roster like that with the new series, but we trust Zaillian is up for the challenge. He did cast Riz Ahmed in The Night Of, which Ahmed won a 2017 Emmy for Lead Actor — Limited Series for his breakthrough performance.

The start date for the new project has yet to be announced, but once it finds a home, it's predicted it will be straight-to-series.
