The Monster in Sandra Bullock's Thriller 'Bird Box' Was Cut Out... But, Why?
If you're one of the supposedly 45 million accounts who have streamed Sandra Bullock's new movie Bird Box, you know what the premise is. It's kind of like A Quiet Place, but instead of aliens who seek and destroy based on sound, this time around, it's sight. Bullock's character Malorie blindfolds herself and her two children as a way to ward off being attacked.
(Slight Spoiler) And, you know that we never actually see the monster. But, that wasn't always the plan. There was in fact a monster made and filmed for the thriller, but it was cut from the final draft. According to director Susanne Bier, the tangible look at the extraterrestrial being came across as "funny," reports Blood Disgusting blog.
In the same interview, Bullock describes it as "a green man with a horrific baby face."
Screenwriter Eric Heisserer, relayed one of the producer's reactions to the first look, who said, "It was just a long fat baby."
Eeks. That does sound creepy, but apparently not the creepy the filmmakers were going for.
It was decided to go with no monster, relying on the unknown, with Bier elaborating: "Whatever those beings are, they tap into your deepest fear. Everybody’s deepest fear is going to be different from the other person."
"I think to suddenly take upon a concrete shape in order to illustrate that becomes weak. Where the concept is really strong, then trying to illustrate it is kind of almost meaningless. So it would have been the wrong decision.”
Leaving it to the viewer's imagination is probably way scarier than what they could have come up with (especially, a long baby).
In case you missed it, here's a peek at the trailer, currently streaming over at Netflix:
