The 2019 Academy Awards Nominations: 'Black Panther' is First Superhero Film Up for Best Picture... Eva!!
This year's Academy Awards nominations were announced this morning (January 22), with Marvel's Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman, being the first superhero film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.
The Best Picture list also includes BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice.
In other "first" news, Spike Lee has been nominated for the Achievement in Directing award, for his biopic BlacKkKlansman.
The list of actors who have been nominated for Leading Role aren't all that surprising, having seen their names pop up at last month's Golden Globes, including Christian Bale for Vice, Bradley Cooper for A Star is Born, Willem Dafoe for At Eternity's Gate, Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody and Viggo Mortensen for Green Book.
The Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role is made up of Olivia Colman for The Favourite, Yalitza Aparicio for Roma, Glenn Close for The Wife, Lady Gaga for A Star is Born and Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Colman won the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award at the 2019 Golden Globes. While Colman might continue her reign over the awards season, of course, a lot of eyes are on Glenn Close, with her being the most nominated living actor to not win an Oscar.
Oof, talk about pressure being on.
Other familiar faces to look for include Regina King for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk, Rachel Weisz for The Favourite and Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me?

The 2019 Academy Award ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 24, broadcasting from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, CA.
