Steven Spielberg is Making a New 'West Side Story' Starring Ansel Elgort

Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) is upping his leading man game with his latest casting. He's set to star in a fresh film adaptation of the Broadway musical West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg, reports Variety.

Arthur Laurents created the 1957 stage production with composer Leonard Bernstein and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and the famous film adaptation hit screens in 1961.

It's a gritty city interpretation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and follows two street gangs in NYC, the Jets and the Sharks. The leader of the Jets, Tony, is in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, who — yep you guessed it — is the leader of the Sharks.

If you're not already familiar with the 10 Academy Award-winning film version of the play, which starred Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood as the lovers from opposite sides of the tracks, here's the trailer:

Elgort will take on the role of Tony, which reportedly took Spielberg nearly a year to cast. Well, it is quite the commitment. As you may know from the lyrics, "When you're a Jet/You're a Jet all the way/From your first cigarette/To your last dyin' day."

We're not sure if this young actor knows he just signed on for the role of a lifetime — fo' ever!

But being a part of this on-screen brotherhood doesn't mean he can't take on other roles. We can also look for Elgort in the sci-fi thriller Jonathan, premiering November 16.

Filming for West Side Story will begin summer 2019.

Now, we just need a Maria! Any suggestions?
