Last month (August 4) it was announced Sir Patrick Stewart would be returning to the Star Trek franchise as the fan favorite Jean-Luc Picard, premiering on CBS ALL Access. It appears he's not only taking on captain-ing duties, but is overseeing social media responsibilities, announcing the writers for the series.

OK, OK, he may not have given up his day job as an actor to oversee the Twittersphere, but we do appreciate his efforts to get the word out.

Stewart posted a photo of himself and the five writers who will be collaborating on this new "journey," including Kirsten Beyer (Star Trek: Discovery), Michael Chabon (Spider-Man 2), Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), Diandra Pendleton-Thompson (Awakening Love) and James Duff (The Closer).

According to Stewart's caption in the above tweet, "The journey has begun." So, can we interpret that literally, as... production has begun? We're seeing five writers, a lead actor, paper, pen, typed copy — if only we could utilize some Law and Order: CSI tactics and zoom in on the pages (even though we understand that doesn't work in actual life) — it appears they are in fact working... on something. Oh, and a lot of bottled water, so they must be working pretty hard to build up such a thirst.

Stewart portrayed Picard in the Star Trek: Next Generation TV series for seven seasons (1987-1994) and four follow-up films from 1994-2002. He also popped up in the pilot for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in 1993.

The name of the new series is currently untitled. The details are wrapped up, but it is known that this is not a Star Trek: New Generation reboot, but instead a continuation of Picard's story. We're hesitant to even tag "Captain" before his name, for all we know, he could be retired at this point in life (probably not).

Stewart thought his run as Picard was over when the show came to an end, but, plans change, with him saying to Variety just last month, "I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course.“

"It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over."
