Sir Patrick Stewart Recalls How He and Sir Ian McKellen Bonded and Became Best Friends

We all know that Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen are the epitome of #FriendshipGoals, but they actually became besties a little more recently than you might realize.

During a new interview with Wired, Stewart recalled how he bonded with his fellow English thesp on the set of their 2000 superhero movie X-Men.

"We had adjoining trailers," Stewart said. "On those kind of movies, you spend more time sitting in your trailer than you do in front of the camera. So, Ian and I hung out together, drinking tea — and maybe in the afternoon, something a little stronger — and we got to know one another. And the charm of it was that we found that we had so much in common."

Stewart also recalled how McKellen played a key role in his 2013 wedding to singer Sunny Ozell, saying: "And by the way, he married us, my wife and me. He performed the ceremony."

As well as appearing together in the X-Men movies, Stewart and McKellen have starred on stage together, teaming up for a 2013 Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's Waiting for Godot and No Man's Land. Three years later, they performed No Man's Land again in London's West End.

Stewart recently guested on The Graham Norton Show to promote Picard, his new Star Trek spin-off series in which he revives his iconic character Jean-Luc Picard. Watch him reliving an embarrassing Star Trek-related experience below.
