Sir Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman Held Hands While Watching Their Final Scene in 'Logan'

Sir Patrick Stewart joined the X-Men franchise in 2000, with his last go as Professor Charles Xavier in 2017's X-Men spinoff movie Logan, opposite Hugh Jackman.

And when Stewart had to say goodbye to the franchise and the character, it got quite emotional.

We don't want to spoil anything for anyone, so if you don't know the fate of the mutant leader, please look away now.

Still here? Okay, Logan takes place in a near future, where the mutants are practically extinct and Logan/Wolverine (Jackman) is living a quiet life on his own. But, he has one last run-in with Professor X. And, it's pretty final.

Stewart recently talked to Digital Spy about seeing the movie for the first time and the impact it had on him, "Shortly after Xavier’s death scene, I found myself getting very emotional but I had to keep a hold of myself because we were sitting in the middle of this cinema."

But, he wasn't alone. He was sitting next to Jackman during the screening, who raised his hand to wipe a tear away. Stewart had been holding it in, but then relayed in the interview, "I thought, ‘Dammit, the bugger’s crying. Oh, let it out Patrick.’ Hugh took my hand, and we held hands with the last seven or eight minutes of the film because there was so many things we were upset about."

It had been a long run for both gentleman and it's understandable that it was difficult to say goodbye. Stewart expanded on all that was going on in that moment, "We were moved by the story. We were moved by one another. We were moved by the movie. But we also both made the decision that we were saying goodbye to our characters as well. In that sense, it was not just the deaths of those two men in the franchise, but it was also goodbye to our part in them as well."

While sad, it's also very sweet. And, at the least, the two had each other to comfort one another.

According to Stewart, he won't be returning to reprise the role of Professor X in any future movies. Which makes sense, considering, well, he died. But, in moviemaking there are ways around that finality.

But, as of now, we will have to just enjoy the wonderful work he's already done in the Marvel Universe and look forward to future projects, like season two of Star Trek: Picard.
