Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh Score Oscar Nominations as 'Joker' Leads the Pack Again
After leading the pack in last week's BAFTA Film Awards nominations, Joker has also emerged as top contender for the Academy Awards.
Director Todd Phillips' pitch-black comic book adaptation has racked up 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. Its super-impressive haul puts it one nomination ahead of Martin Scorsese‘s The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which received 10 nominations apiece.
Florence Pugh, the breakout star of AMC's miniseries The Little Drummer Girl, adds a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination to her BAFTA nod from last week. The 24-year-old's reaction face when she found out about her nomination is quite something:
Pugh's Little Women co-star Saoirse Ronan is nominated in the Best Actress category. At 25 years old, the Irish star is the second-youngest actor ever to rack up four Oscar nominations behind Jennifer Lawrence, who was also 25, but a few months younger, when she earned her fourth nomination in 2015.
Scarlett Johansson lands two acting nominations for her performances in Marriage Story (Best Actress) and Jojo Rabbit (Best Supporting Actress). Cynthia Erivo also becomes a double nominee, earning a Best Actress nod for her performance in the Harriet Tubman biopic Harriet, and a Best Original Song nod for "Stand Up," a song from its soundtrack which she co-composed.
There are also acting nominations for The Two Popes stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, plus 2020 awards season favorites Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt, and Laura Dern.
Notable omissions from the acting shortlists include Taron Egerton, who didn't receive a Best Actor nomination for portraying Sir Elton John in Rocketman despite his recent Golden Globe win. Jennifer Lopez, who was widely expected to crack the Best Supporting Actress category for her charismatic performance in Hustlers, is also surprisingly snubbed.
For the ninth time in 10 years, the Best Director shortlist is an all-male affair. Greta Gerwig, the only female director nominated during the past decade, for Lady Bird in 2017, fails to make the shortlist, though her acclaimed literary adaptation Little Women does receive six nominations overall.
