The acclaimed series Killing Eve just came to an end, but that doesn’t mean its star Sandra Oh is going to take a break. Oh has signed on for a new project, set to star in the forthcoming feature film Stone Mattress, reports Deadline.
The movie is based on Margaret Atwood’s short story Stone Mattress, which first appeared in The New Yorker in 2011. The title alone paints a picture, a “stone mattress” does not sound all that comfortable. The story takes place on a cruise ship in the Arctic, and we’re guessing things are going to get uncomfortable for the characters, as this is deemed a thriller.
In addition to Oh, we can look for Julianne Moore. Moore is set to portray a woman named Verna, who is described as being elegant and witty. Oh takes on the role of Grace, who is friendly and charming. It sounds like these two would hit it off well. There’s also a character named Bob, who has yet to be cast, and he fancies Verna.
Atwood herself took a cruise ship through the Arctic and wrote the short story while on it. In an interview with The New Yorker, she said, “I did write the story on board, after some idle conversation about whether one could murder someone on such a cruise and get away with it.” Well, that just provided some clarity on what to expect.
If you’d like to get a head start on the movie, you can read the short story over at The New Yorker.
Here is the first sentence in the story, which may help set the stage: “At the outset Verna had not intended to kill anyone. What she had in mind was a vacation, pure and simple.”
Okay, this isn’t just a thriller. It’s a killer-thriller. The perfect genre for “our” Oh.
Filming will begin in September in Greenland and Iceland.
