Ruth Wilson (Luther) has starred opposite Dominic West (The Wire) in the dramatic series The Affair since its 2014 premiere on Showtime. Their characters, Alison and Noah, are married to other people when they meet, but this doesn't stop them from becoming romantically involved.

If you're up to date on the series, you'll know that Wilson's Alison was written out in the season four episode that aired August 5. We're not going to spoil it for those who aren't caught up on the show, (you can read The New York Times recap here), but we can tell you that Wilson is officially exiting the series — for good.

Wilson announced her departure yesterday (August 16), as she talked to Gayle King on CBS This Morning: "I did want to leave, but I'm not allowed to talk about why," she said.

She may not be able to talk about it, but coming out and saying she's not able to talk about it has really made us want to talk about it...

King suggested it's because West was paid more than Wilson. The actress responded saying she had "never complained to Showtime about pay parity."

We recently did a post on Wilson, outlining eight reasons we can't get enough of her, and this turn of events reinforces some of the traits we listed off, including, "She has killer instincts," "She digs deep" and, "She's full of surprises." Clearly, she's a woman who thinks for herself and follows her gut.

Showtime has responded to her comment in a statement, saying, "Everyone agreed the character's story had run its course," implying they were the ones to pull the plug.

Well, whatever really went on, we're okay with her leaving the show because it frees Wilson up for more great projects.

We may never get the full story, but here's what we do know: Wilson is starring in a new horror-mystery movie called The Little Stranger (out August 31), and she was more than happy to talk about this project in the same interview with King:

Wilson's definitely not short of work, that's for sure. We can also look for her in the forthcoming TV miniseries, Mrs. Wilson and His Dark Materials (Rel: TBD), and it seems like she's also making a return to Luther. Season five is currently filming and expected to air in 2019.
