Rooney Mara is signed on to star as Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn in an upcoming big-screen biopic.
The two-time Oscar nominee (for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Carol) will also produce the movie with Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria) directing, Deadline reports. Michael Mitnick (Vinyl, The Staggering Girl) is writing the screenplay for the biopic, which is in the works at Apple.
There's no word yet on which periods of Hepburn's life the film will focus on, but her story definitely lends itself to a biopic. Born in Belgium to wealthy parents who lost their money during World War II, she trained as a ballerina in the Netherlands before launching her career as a chorus girl in London's West End.
After taking elocution lessons to improve her voice, Hepburn's acting career really took off. She won an Oscar for her performance in the 1953 rom-com Roman Holiday (and received four subsequent Oscar nominations) and won a Tony the following year for her performance in Ondine.
Hepburn is perhaps best remembered for her performance as the ambiguous society girl Holly Golighty in 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's, which cemented her reputation as a style icon. After her acting career became more sporadic in the 1970s, she reinvented herself as a humanitarian who served as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. She won Emmy and Grammy awards after her death in 1993, completing the prestigious "EGOT" clean sweep posthumously.
So, there is clearly plenty for Mara and Guadagnino to sink their teeth into.
