6 Roles That Made Us Appreciate Daryl McCormack

Daryl McCormack is in the running for two BAFTA Film Awards this Sunday (February 17): Best Actor in a Leading Role for Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, and the Rising Star Award. It's bound to be a big night for the 30-year-old Irishman, so we're taking an opportunity to look back at six roles that have made him one to watch.

1. The Randomer (2016)

McCormack made his movie debut in this Irish comedy movie about a Dublin woman called Meg (George Hanover) who realizes she wants – really wants – to have a baby. He plays Ray, a local guy whom Meg thinks could be a potential father. Whether he is quite so keen on the idea is another matter entirely, though.

2. Peaky Blinders (2019-2022)

In season five of the BBC's dark period drama, McCormack took over the role of Isiah Jesus from original actor Jordan Bolger. Isiah is a close friend of Finn Shelby (Harry Kirton) and is well respected by the Peaky Blinders gang as a whole. With McCormack's star on the rise, he played a more prominent part in last year's sixth and final season.

3. Pixie (2020)

This quirky black comedy movie follows two men and a woman on the run in the Irish countryside following a botched heist. Harland (McCormack) and Frank (Ben Hardy) may think they're in control of the situation, but savvy gangster's daughter Pixie (Olivia Cooke) has other ideas. It's a film that keeps you guessing right until the clever climax.

4. The Wheel of Time (2021)

McCormack pops up in three episodes of the hit fantasy series as Aram, a dashing master swordsman who becomes disillusioned when his mother is killed. It's a relatively small role, but one that gives him an opportunity to show off his twinkly charisma.

5. Bad Sisters (2022)

Exec produced by Sharon Horgan, this twisty black comedy series follows five sisters who find themselves at the center of a life insurance investigation. McCormack plays Matt, an investigator who begins a relationship with the youngest sister, Becka (Eve Hewson), without realizing that she and her siblings are accused of plotting to kill a family member. It's a brilliantly gripping show that has been renewed for a second season.

6. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)

McCormack's big-screen breakthrough comes in this clever, edgy comedy movie. He plays the title character, a male sex worker hired by an older woman (Emma Thompson) to revitalize her unfulfilling sex life. Essentially a two-hander between McCormack and Thompson, who have both picked up BAFTA nominations, it's a sensitive but in no way squeamish exploration of intimacy, consent, and a woman's growing self-worth.
