After making her movie comeback in 2016's charming Bridget Jones's Baby, Renée Zellweger has landed her first ever series regular TV role.

The Oscar-winning actress has signed up to star in What/If, a 10-part Netflix drama that's being billed as a "social thriller."

What/If is conceived as an anthology series. According to the streaming giant, "each season will tackle a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life."

Little else has been revealed about the series – except that it "explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things," and Zellweger has been cast as a character called Anne.

Revenge's Mike Kelley will serve as writer and showrunner, and the exec producers include Hollywood veteran Robert Zemecki. No premiere date has been announced yet.

But we'll most probably see Zellweger first in Judy, a big screen biopic of Hollywood icon Judy Garland. Filming took place in London earlier this year, when production company Pathé released the first picture of Zellweger in character as the "Over the Rainbow" star. 

Explaining why she took a six-year break from acting before returning in Bridget Jones's Baby, Zellweger told Vogue in 2016: "I was fatigued and wasn’t taking the time I needed to recover between projects, and it caught up with me. I got sick of the sound of my own voice: it was time to go away and grow up a bit.”

She added: "I found anonymity, so I could have exchanges with people on a human level and be seen and heard, not be defined by this image that precedes me when I walk into a room. You cannot be a good storyteller if you don’t have life experiences, and you can’t relate to people.”
