Pop Culture Pulse: From New Murder Mystery Series 'Harry Wild' to an All-Star TV Comedy 'Ten Percent'
April is synonymous with, well, April showers, but don't worry if this month is a washout. There are plenty of ways to entertain yourself from the comfort of your own home or local movie theater. Here's our pick of the month's TV, film, and music highlights.
1. A MURDER MYSTERY SERIES WITH A SPARKY LEAD CHARACTER
Harry Wiild
Jane Seymour leads this Irish mystery thriller series as Harriet "Harry" Wild, a retired English professor who goes to stay with her police detective son, Charlie (Copper's Kevin Ryan). Once there, she notices striking similarities between an incredibly tricky murder case he is investigating and an obscure Elizabethan play she once taught. Soon Harry becomes involved in cracking the case, against Charlie's wishes, and rediscovers her lust for life in the process. Frankly, this series looks intriguing and a lot of fun too.
Harry Wild premieres Monday, April 4 on Acorn TV.
2. A TOPICAL THRILLER SERIES WITH AN AWESOME CAST
61st Street
The great Courtney B. Vance and recent Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis star in this legal thriller series from British writer Peter Moffat (Your Honor, Silk). Doctor Who alum Tosin Cole plays Moses Johnson, a talented high school athlete who gets cruelly sucked into Chicago's corrupt criminal justice system when cops take him for a gang member. Vance portrays Franklin Roberts, the lawyer hired to defend him in a case defined by the police's desire to exact revenge for the death of an officer during a drug bust. Expect to be gripped from the start.
61st Street premieres Sunday, April 10 on AMC with the first two episodes available to stream on AMC+ and ALLBLK. Subsequent episodes will be available one week early on AMC+ and ALLBLK.
3. A LAST HURRAH (WELL, ALMOST) FOR A TV ICON
Better Call Saul
In this sixth and final season, troubled hero Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) will complete his transformation into Saul Goodman, the slippery criminal lawyer we meet in Breaking Bad. Executive Producer Peter Gould calls it the "most ambitious, surprising and, yes, heartbreaking season" of Better Call Saul yet, and it's being split into two parts to make saying goodbye just a little bit easier. The first seven episodes will begin premiering later this month, with the final six following in July. No, you have something in your eye.
The first seven episodes of Better Call Saul's final season begin Sunday, April 18 on AMC and AMC+.
4. AN INDIE FILM THAT LOOKS GENUINELY ORIGINAL
Memoria
We can rely on Tilda Swinton to choose some of the most interesting projects around. In this indie film from Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, she plays a Scottish expatriate living in Medellín, Colombia who finds herself haunted by strange noises that only she can hear. She asks a recording studio engineer, Hernán (Juan Pablo Urrego), to help her recreate the sound, which he does, but the next time she visits, she's told no one called Hernán ever worked there. Memoria definitely looks like a movie to blow your mind a bit.
Memoria opens in select theaters Friday, April 1.
5. A PERFECT POP SONG FOR A MELANCHOLY MOMENT
Harry Styles: "As It Was"
"In this world, it's just us, you know it's not the same as it was," sings Harry Styles on the lead single from his upcoming third album, Harry's House. Since One Direction disbanded in 2016, the Brit has established himself as a bona fide solo star with a gift for intimate and intriguingly ambiguous songwriting. This shimmering synth-pop gem is no exception and benefits from a lovely, wistful chorus that could end up swimming in your head for days. Could it become Styles' next "Watermelon Sugar"-style megahit? Time will tell.
"As It Was" is out now on Columbia Records.
6. A BIOGRAPHICAL MOVIE THAT MAY MAKE YOU WEEP
To Olivia
Hugh Bonneville and Keeley Hawes play real-life couple Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal in this British indie film. Set in the early 1960s, it follows the author and award-winning actress as they deal with the tragic loss of their daughter Olivia at a young age. Given the desperately sad subject matter, it looks like a poignant watch – one with a fine supporting cast that includes Outlander's Sam Heughan as Paul Newman and, in his final film appearance, the late Geoffrey Palmer as religious leader Geoffrey Fisher.
To Olivia opens in select theaters Friday, April 15.
7. A WILDLIFE DOC WITH A BIT OF A DIFFERENCE
Cow
Directed by Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Big Little Lies), this documentary film aims to provide an insight into the life cycle of a typical cow. Arnold uses close-up footage of cows being milked, calves being born, and the animals being dehorned to evoke empathy for creatures who are bred, ultimately, to supply sustenance for humans. Don't be surprised if you find it more moving than you might have expected.
Cow opens in select theaters and on VOD Friday, April 8.
8. A CRIME MINISERIES TO LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS
Hidden Assets
This high-stakes crime drama takes place across Ireland and Belgium. When Irish detective Emer Berry (Angeline Ball) discovers that a small-time drug dealer has been receiving payment in rough diamonds, she and her team trace the dodgy jewels to Belgium, where they turn out to be linked to a series of terrorist bombings. In deep, Berry must team up with a Belgian officer Christian De Jong (Wouter Hendrickx) to unpick the link and prevent another bombing. Already a hit in Ireland, Hidden Assets looks like edge-of-your-seat stuff.
Hidden Assets premieres Monday, April 18 on Acorn TV.
9. A COUNTRY ALBUM THAT'S BOTH CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY
Orville Peck: Bronco
Canadian singer Orville Peck is one of the most fascinating artists around. He makes richly emotional, classic-sounding country music inspired by legends like Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, but sings in a very modern way about his romantic encounters with men. And because he is only ever pictured wearing his signature fringed mask, no one really knows his true identity (Orville Peck is a pseudonym). If recent singles "The Curse of the Blackened Eye" and "Daytona Sand" are anything to go on, this second album should offer a stellar introduction to his super-evocative musical world.
Bronco is released Friday, April 8 on Sub Pop and Columbia Records.
10. A SATIRICAL COMEDY SERIES WITH LOADS OF GUEST STARS
Ten Percent
This new ensemble comedy series is the British adaptation of French hit Call My Agent!; the title refers to the "cut" that agents take from their clients. Jack Davenport, Lydia Leonard, Prasanna Puwanarajah, Hiftu Quasem, and Maggie Steed portray employees at a small London agency trying to balance the competing needs of their demanding stars while also keeping the business afloat. Helena Bonham Carter, David Oyelowo and Emma Corrin are among the guest stars lined up for this first season, so Ten Percent has the makings of a tongue-in-cheek treat.
Sundance Now and AMC+ will exclusively premiere the first two episodes on Friday, April 29 with one new episode following weekly on Fridays. An encore airing of the first episode will debut linearly on BBC America Sunday, May 1 with one episode weekly thereafter.
