We first met Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the creator and star of the hit comedy series Fleabag. And from there, she became a part of the BBC America family, spearheading Killing Eve as writer and showrunner for season one.
She’s making her return to acting, set to star in the forthcoming installment of the long-running franchise Indiana Jones. Up until now, her character description has been tightly wrapped. It turns out, she’s set to portray Helena, Indy’s goddaughter.
Waller-Bridge had a check-in with Empire, saying Helena is “a mystery and a wonder.” She went on to describe how the role came about, relaying a conversation with producer Kathleen Kennedy: “Kathy was in London and asked to have dinner with me, and casually mentioned this. I immediately ordered ten bottles of wine. Then it was the fastest I’ve ever read a script; I came out of a sort of haze afterwards. I just couldn’t believe how much fun I had and how moved I was by it. And then I had a Zoom and screamed, ‘YES!’ at them all.”
Director James Mangold also hinted at what to expect, describing Helena as “slippery, charming, the girl next door, a grifter.” Harrison Ford, who portrays Indiana Jones, provided the finishing touch, saying, she’s “a pioneer in ethical accounting.”
Filming is complete with Waller-Bridge talking about the on-set experience, saying, “Honestly, I just loved it. When you’re playing a character who throws herself on the back of a vehicle, there’s no acting around that. You just have to bloody do it.”
While the plot is still unknown, we’re going into the next movie a little more prepared. We can 100% see Waller-Bridge in this character. And that Waller-Bridge and Ford will play well off of each other.
Indiana Jones 5 is predicted to release in 2023.
