Phoebe Waller-Bridge Discusses Her 'Spicy' Additions to New Bond Movie 'No Time to Die'

When it was confirmed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge had contributed to the script of new James Bond movie No Time to Die, fans were understandably excited. After all, the writer-creator-star of Fleabag and executive producer of Killing Eve is one of the hottest names in film and TV right now – and she's since won a trio of Emmy Awards.

Now Waller-Bridge has discussed "adding little spices" to the movie's screenplay, which was co-written by its director, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Scott Z. Burns (The Laundromat), and Skyfall/Spectre writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. "They were just looking for tweaks across a few of the characters and a few of the storylines," she told BBC News.

Waller-Bridge is only the second woman to have contributed to a Bond script, after Johanna Harwood, who co-wrote the Sean Connery classic Dr No. It's been rumored that a new character played by Captain America actress Lashana Lynch will be introduced as the first ever female 007, presumably while Craig's Bond is out of service.

However, Waller-Bridge dismissed suggestions that she was brought on board to make the franchise more "feminist" and in line with the times. "They were already doing that themselves," she said. "They're having that conversation with themselves the whole time. It [my involvement] was much more practical. Just, 'You're a writer, we need some help with these scenes... Come up with some dialogue for these characters.’"

Bond star Daniel Craig recently revealed that it was his idea to ask Waller-Bridge to contribute to the movie, telling The Sunday Times: "I had my eye on her ever since the first Fleabag [TV series], and then I saw Killing Eve and what she did with that and just wanted her voice. It is so unique — we are very privileged to have her on board.”

No Time to Die is set to open in U.S. theaters on April 8, 2020, five days after its U.K. release. Rami Malek is playing the main villain who’ll cause trouble for Craig's Bond, while franchise faves Andrew Scott, Naomie Harris, and Ben Whishaw are all back for the 25th instalment.
