Ex-Doctor Peter Capaldi is reuniting with The Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci for a new adaptation of David Copperfield.

The Veep and Death of Stalin director is currently assembling an impressive cast for his big-screen version of Charles Dickens' 1850 novel, which so far includes Dev Patel in the titular role, plus Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, and Ben Whishaw in so far undisclosed parts — although anyone who knows the book can take an educated guess.

And now his old pal Peter, who famously portrayed sweary Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, will play Mr. Micawber.

The announcement was met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction from fans, who are excited to see Peter put a new — perhaps more foul-mouthed or enigmatic — slant on the famously cheery character.

Mr. Micawber is one of Dickens' best-known characters, whose optimistic disposition never wavers, despite being threatened with and eventually thrown into a debtors' prison.

It's the latest role for Peter since he bade farewell to the TARDIS last year. Since then, he's also appeared in Paddington 2 and voiced Rabbit in Disney's upcoming live-action Winnie the Pooh film Christopher Robin.

The Personal History of David Copperfield is currently in pre-production, but will likely start filming later this year.
