Nicolas Cage Set to Star in Film Adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's 'The Color Out of Space'

Nicolas Cage isn't new to sci-fi, starring in films like 2007's Next and 2009's Knowing. He's making a return to the genre, signing on for the screen adaptation of author H.P. Lovecraft's The Color Out of Space, reports ComingSoon.net.

The short story was written and published in 1927, deemed a hybrid of sci-fi and horror. The original story is set in the late 1800s, with the film adaptation speeding up to the 21st century. Writer and director Richard Stanley's version will revolve around a family named the Gardners. As they settle into their new home in New England, a meteorite lands in their front yard, of all places. Everything around them slowly becomes discolored, tainting the vegetation, farm animals and eventually, yep, people.

SpectreVision co-founder Daniel Noah, who will be producing the film, released a statement about the project, saying, "Lovecraft is the dark father of modern horror, and we have been searching for an adaptation that captures the true scope of his cosmic dread for years."

Noah refers to Stanley as a "wizard in his own right," and says he "will at long last bring Lovecraft’s humbling power to the screen unfiltered."

It hasn't been confirmed what role Cage will be playing, but we're leaning toward Mr. Gardner. We trust Cage to master the character, whatever it turns out to be, having also starred in horror films like 2006's The Wicker Man and 2007's Ghost Rider (oh, yeah, and his winning an Oscar for his lead in Leaving Las Vegas).

Cage recently starred in the 2018 fantasy-thriller Between Worlds and the horror flick Mandy, which is currently streaming via Shudder. Also in 2018, he provided the voice for Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
