New Trailer: Idris Elba Returns for 'Luther' Season Five... and, Alice!!

Last year it was announced, the multi-award-winning Luther is returning to BBC America with a new, four-part limited-series written and created by Neil Cross and starring Idris Elba in 2019.

Elba, who has received critical acclaim and a Golden Globe®, SAG and Critics’ Choice Award for his performance as DCI John Luther, returns for season five. Elba back as our beloved, yet slightly dysfunctional detective, is news in of itself, but, he's not the only familiar face we look forward to seeing...

You get one guess, and if your answer is: Alice!! You are absolutely correct. A haunting remix of Britney Spears' "Toxic" single brings us back into this gritty crime drama.

If you've watched the entire clip, you saw a quick look at Ruth Wilson as Alice in a beret at the very-very end, looking like her wonderful villainous self. Prior to that, we learn Luther is investigating a series of murders. At first inspection, the criminal activity seems to be unrelated, but as he digs in, there may be some sort of pattern to it all, with him in the squad room, saying, "This isn't random is it? There's gonna be more."

Luther hasn't changed much since we last saw him, still going by his own rules, alienating colleagues, saying to DSU Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley) in the above, "So, you're telling me to behave myself? Oh, dear."

He took the words right out of our mouth, "Oh, dear indeed."

Last year, Cross talked about the continuation of Luther's story for season five, saying, "Now what? It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it?"

"We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of Luther there's ever been. So that's what we've come back to do."

We can also look for Wunmi Mosaku, who plays Luther's new partner. And Patrick Malahide as a gangster, returning from last season.

The premiere date has yet to be announced, but we will surely let you know once confirmed.
