Neil Gaiman Announces the Leads for His New 'The Sandman' Series
In 2019, we saw Neil Gaiman's Good Omens brought to the screen, starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen in the leads. Viewers have been asking for more Good Omens, and while that may not be happening, we will be getting more Gaiman.
His comic book series, The Sandman, which kicked off in 1989, is being made into an 11-part series for Netflix.
Gaiman turned to Twitter to announce the first batch of actors to star, writing, "There. A whole set of tweets written just before bed and set to go out when I'm fast asleep. I'm vaguely worried that I've mistimed them, but too late now. Here are the first seven members of the #Sandman cast to be announced officially. Seven down, hundreds to go."
We can look for Tom Sturridge (The Hollow Crown) as Dream, Lord of the Dreaming, Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as Lucifer, Lord of Hell and Vivienne Acheampong (Famalam) as Lucienne, Librarian of Dreaming.
Gaiman points out in a separate tweet that Lucien was originally male and the character has been made female.
In addition to the above, the initial casting is rounded out by Charles Dance (The Crown) as Roderick Burgess, Charlatan and Magician, Sanjeev Bhaskar (Unforgotten) as Cain, The First Predator, Asim Chaudhry (Hitmen) as Abel, The First Victim and Boyd Holbrook (The Fugitive) as The Corinthian, An Escaped Nightmare.
We're kind of loving the characters' names, they provide foreshadow in themselves...
But, rather than relying on the names alone, we do have an official synopsis, which reads: "A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence."
Gaiman has released a statement along with the casting news, saying, "For the last 33 years, the Sandman characters have breathed and walked around and talked in my head. I’m unbelievably happy that now, finally, they get to step out of my head and into reality. I can’t wait until the people out there get to see what we’ve been seeing as Dream and the rest of them take flesh, and the flesh belongs to some of the finest actors out there. This is astonishing, and I’m so grateful to the actors and to all of The Sandman collaborators — Netflix, Warner Bros., DC, to Allan Heinberg and David Goyer, and the legions of crafters and geniuses on the show — for making the wildest of all my dreams into reality," reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Well, he just sounds delightful and we are more than ready to see his characters come to life on-screen.
