Maurice Roëves, the prolific Scottish actor who appeared in Doctor Who, The Last of the Mohicans, and Days of Our Lives, has died at age 83.

Roëves appeared opposite Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor in the four-part Doctor Who serial "The Caves of Androzani" in 1984. He also made guest appearances in a whole host of US TV series including Remington Steele, Murder, She Wrote, Cheers, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Baywatch, and Magnum, P.I.. He also put in an eight-episode guest stint on Days of Our Lives in 1985-6.

His movie appearances included supporting roles in 1991's The Last of the Mohicans, 1995's Judge Dredd, and 2009's The Damned United. Earlier this year, he made his final screen appearance in the Scotland-set BBC miniseries The Nest, which is streaming now on Acorn TV.

He is survived by his wife Vanessa Roëves, who told the BBC that her husband had been ill for some time. She also said that though he often portrayed tough guys on screen, he was actually a "softie" in real life.

Confirming his death in a statement today, his agent told The Independent: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm the passing of our wonderful client Maurice Roëves. Maurice had a hugely successful career in both theatre and screen which spanned several decades, starting in his home country of Scotland and moving to London and the United States.

"As well as being a truly dedicated and gifted actor, he was also a real gentleman and a delight to have as a client. We will miss him greatly and our thoughts and love go out to Vanessa and his family."
