'Matrix 4' is Happening: Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss and Creator Lana Wachowski Returning
The first Matrix premiered in 1999 and now 20 years later it's been confirmed there will be a new installment, reports Variety. And, that's not all, both original cast members Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss will return to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.
In addition to Reeves and Moss, Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote and directed the first three films is set to return. She created the sci-fi/thriller franchise with her sister, Lilly Wachowski. The sibling writing partners refer to themselves professionally as The Wachowski Brothers.
If The Matrix is new to you, the start of the story revolves around a young man named Neo. His life is pretty typical: he goes to work, goes out, goes home... repeat. That's until he begins to receive clues that all is not what it seems. Neo is given a choice, to keep living life as he knows it or to learn the truth of his reality.
Wachowski has teamed up with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell to write the script for Matrix 4. Filming is predicted to begin in 2020, with Wachowski on board to direct.
She released a statement about the return, saying, "Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."
If it's been a minute seeing the first film, here's a look at the trailer:
Reeves recently starred in this year's John Wick: Chapter 3 and stepped into the Toy Story franchise, lending his voice to Duke Caboom. In 2016, Moss starred in the AMC sci-fi series Humans. And from 2015-2019, she took on the role of Jeri Hogarth in the superhero series Jessica Jones.
