'Little Britain' Stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams to Reunite for New TV SketchApril 17, 2020
It's official: Little Britain is coming back to TV next week.
Co-creators Matt Lucas and David Walliams have confirmed to the BBC that they'll reunite for for the network's coronavirus charity special The Big Night In.
They haven't said which characters they'll play in the sketch, which will be the first time Little Britain has appeared on TV in nearly 12 years. Lucas and Williams previously reunited last fall for a one-off topical radio special, Little Brexit.
The Big Night In is being organized by Comic Relief and Children Need and will air for three hours on BBC One in the U.K. next Thursday (April 23). It's already been confirmed that Catherine Tate is bringing back her schoolgirl character Lauren Cooper for the special – in a new sketch co-starring her old Doctor Who buddy David Tennant.
Walliams and Lucas launched Little Britain as a radio sketch show in 2000 before developing it into an enormously successful TV series which aired in the U.S. on BBC America. However, since the show ended 12 years ago, Walliams and Lucas have been criticized for their depictions of people of color, LGBTQ characters, and other minority groups.
Since reunion rumors began to swirl at the start of the year, Lucas has said that a possible new series of Little Britain might not feature characters which have aged badly.
"We need to sit down and work out who we are bringing back and who we aren't," Lucas told The Sun recently. "I think the reason the show was successful is because it reflected how we all were back when we made it – if we hadn't have got that right it wouldn't have been so popular."
"I think to make it successful today you'd have to reflect how we all are now," he added. "I think you definitely have a better chance of success if you are in sync with how people are at that time."
The program may not air in the U.S., but we're hoping to get a look at clips via social media.
