Kate Winslet has admitted she's "grappling with regrets" over her past decisions to work with highly controversial directors Woody Allen and Roman Polanski.

In 2011, Winslet starred in Carnage, a black-comedy movie directed by Polanski, who has been a fugitive from the U.S. criminal justice system since 1978, when he fled the country while awaiting sentencing on five criminal charges, including rape.

Six years later, she made the period drama movie Wonder Wheel with Allen, who has seen several actors distance themselves from him after the #MeToo movement brought allegations of child sexual abuse made by his daughter Dylan Farrow to the fore. Having worked with Allen on the 2019 movie A Rainy Day in New York, Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, and Rebecca Hall all later announced that they would be donating their fees to charity.

Discussing the #MeToo movement in a new interview with Vanity Fair, seven-time Oscar nominee Winslet said she'd "like to do my best when it comes to setting a decent example to younger women."

"It’s like, what the f**k was I doing working with Woody Allen and Roman Polanski?" she added. "It’s unbelievable to me now how those men were held in such high regard, so widely in the film industry and for as long as they were. It’s f**king disgraceful. And I have to take responsibility for the fact that I worked with them both. I can’t turn back the clock. I’m grappling with those regrets but what do we have if we aren’t able to just be f**king truthful about all of it?"

In a 2017 interview with the New York Times, Winslet was asked whether the allegations against Allen had made her "pause" before accepting her Wonder Wheel role. "As the actor in the film, you just have to step away and say, I don’t know anything, really, and whether any of it is true or false," she replied. "Having thought it all through, you put it to one side and just work with the person."

Her response was later quoted in a 2018 L.A. Times op-ed by Dylan Farrow, who added: "It breaks my heart when women and men I admire work with Allen, then refuse to answer questions about it."

Winslet's latest movie Ammonite, a romantic drama co-starring Saoirse Ronan, is due to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend and will open in U.S. theaters November 13. Check out the trailer here.
