We all know and love Karen Gillan as Doctor Who companion Amy Pond. Since making her exit from the beloved sci-fi series, she's joined the Marvel family.

Gillan took on the villainess role of Nebula in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel, Vol. 2. Nebula also popped up in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

A third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled for 2021. While filming hasn't started yet, Gillan is looking forward to reprising the role.

She recently sat in on a virtual panel for GalaxyCon Live and talked about her expectations for her character. Gillan backtracked a bit, explaining Nebula's history, saying, “In Avengers, she had to face the source of her abuse, then actually watch him get eliminated from her life."

When she says "him", Gillan is referring to Nebula's adoptive father Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Gillan riffs about what's to come, saying, “I’m sort of thinking about future Nebula in the sense like, ‘What is she going to be like now that that person’s abuse has gone out of her life? How is she going to build herself back up again?’"

Gillan ponders her own questions, realizing it can be conflicting for Nebula, saying, "Because it’s an odd feeling, I think, for someone who’s been abused by a parent, because they still love them and they’re sad that they’re gone, but also they hate them and they’re glad that they’re gone… I’m interested to maybe try and take her to a place now where she’s starting to rebuild her life."

We would like to see Nebula find some peace. She struggled with her adoptive sister Gamora (Zoe Saldana) in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, wanting to join forces with her in some moments, though her anger wouldn't allow it.

Gillan also addressed the sibling rivalry, created by Thanos pitting them against each other. He made Gamora the "golden child" and Nebula the "scapegoat."

Gillan doesn't have siblings in real life, and relied on reading up on psychology essays to understand the complexity of familial abuse.

In addition to carrying on the legacy of Nebula, Gillan has been writing and directing. In 2018, she released a film she made and starred in called The Party's Just Beginning, based in her native Scotland.
