The late June Brown has been honored with a touching (and subtle) tribute in the latest episode of EastEnders
In the episode of the BBC soap opera that aired in the U.K. on July 4, Sonia Fowler (played by Natalie Cassidy) enters the show's traditional East End cafe and says, "Give us a tea, Kath, and a glass of water so I can take a paracetamol."
It's a poignant reference to Brown's first-ever scene as EastEnders matriarch Dot Cotton, which aired exactly 37 years earlier on July 4, 1985. In that scene, Brown's Dot enters the same cafe and says: "Give us a tea, Lofty, and a glass of water so I can take a paracetamol."
In a behind-the-scenes clip shared on Twitter, Cassidy explains that she and the EastEnders team also paid tribute to Brown with Sonia's choice of coat outfit.
"We've even got a little mac on today, just as a little nod to Dot's character," Cassidy says. "Obviously I can't come in dressed as Dot because that would look really silly on the show, but we were thinking... even costume got involved and said maybe Sonia could have a little shopping bag like Dot used to have. So maybe when I come in I can have it over my arm. Just a little nod to the greatness that was June Brown."

Brown, who appeared in 2,884 episodes of EastEnders between 1985 and 2020, passed away this past April at age 95. The BBC's director-general Tim Davie said in a statement: "June Brown was a brilliantly talented actor who was loved by millions. Her performances as the incomparable Dot Cotton delivered some of the most memorable moments in soap history."
