Jodie Comer is having quite the start to the week. Fresh from her win at the BAFTA TV Awards, the Killing Eve actress has lined up an exciting new movie role.
Deadline brings news that Comer will be starring in The End We Start From, an apocalyptic thriller film with a topical climate change plot line. She will play a mother with a newborn baby trying to escape from a version of London that has been completely submerged beneath floodwaters.
Directed by Mahalia Belo (Requiem, The Long Song), the movie is described as a "feminist survival story" and is based on Megan Hunter's 2017 novel of the same name. Succession writer Alice Birch has penned the screenplay and Benedict Cumberbatch is among the movie's exec producers.
The movie's producers Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland and Liza Marshall said of the project: "The End We Start From is very close to our hearts. Megan’s heart-wrenching novel, and Alice’s wonderful adaptation, present a story about motherhood, separation, social and environmental upheaval, and those primal instincts in us which draw moments of joy and inspiration out of the chaos. We are incredibly excited to have Mahalia and Jodie lead this talented creative team in making what we know will be a resonant, riveting film."
Comer won her second BAFTA TV award on Sunday night for her performance as a severely tested care assistant in Help, a hard-hitting TV movie set during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. During her acceptance speech, she thanked Help's writer Jack Thorne for his "integrity, passion, and completely changing my view and priorities in the work I want to do going forwards."
It certainly sounds as though The End We Start From is another movie with a mission.
