James Corden has dropped a very welcome bombshell on Twitter this morning, by announcing that his beloved British sitcom Gavin & Stacey is coming back!

The Late Late Show host shared a photo of the script for a "Christmas Special" episode of the show which he and co-creator Ruth Jones have written.

"See you on Christmas Day," he added, confirming that in the U.K., the comeback episode has been given a coveted spot on BBC One's December 25 schedule.

They also confirmed that the whole cast will be returning for the one-hour special.

Co-created and co-written by Ruth Jones, Gavin and Stacey ran for three seasons plus a Christmas Special between 2007 and 2010, airing in the U.S. on BBC America. It followed a long-distance relationship that blossomed between Gavin (Mathew Horne), a young man living in Essex near London, and Stacey (Joanna Page, who played Queen Elizabeth I in the Doctor Who episode "The Day of the Doctor"), a young woman from the Welsh seaside resort of Barry Island.

Corden and Jones co-starred as their respective besties, Smithy and Vanessa, and the supporting cast included Brit TV fave Alison Steadman (Orphan Black), Rob Brydon (The Trip), Larry Lamb (New Tricks), and Melanie Walters (Submarine).

Corden and Jones collected a couple of BAFTA awards for the show, which was recently voted the 17th greatest British sitcom of all time.

Corden and Jones said in a press statement today: "Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey — where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special. We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen."

Interestingly, three separate attempts to remake the show in the U.S. haven't quite worked out. In 2008, NBC ordered a pilot script that was never filmed; then in 2019 ABC's version didn't even get that far. The most recent attempt came in 2013, when Fox reimagined Gavin & Stacey as Us & Them with Jason Ritter as Gavin and Alexis Bledel as Stacey. The network commissioned 13 episodes, but only six were filmed–and never broadcast.
