Hugh Grant “Very Much Unwanted” for ‘Four Weddings’ Role
At this point, most of us have seen Four Weddings and a Funeral a number of times, with the film hitting theaters twenty years ago in 1994.
It’s hard to imagine the screen gem with anyone else but Hugh Grant starring as the seasoned bachelor Charles. But, Grant wasn’t always the frontrunner.
The quintessentially British actor swung by The Graham Norton Show to talk about his rom-com comeback The Rewrite (but more about that below), and spilled the beans on his Four Weddings audition process, telling Norton, “I had to audition and in fact I was very much unwanted.”
It’s not too surprising he had to audition, that’s pretty much protocol, but unwanted by who?
Grant goes on to elaborate, saying, “Richard Curtis did everything in his power to stop me getting the part after the audition.”
Really? That doesn’t sound like Curtis. Okay, we admit, we don’t know the established director all that well.
“It was a very traumatic audition,” admits Grant.
Grant showed up to the audition prepared with a unique idea, reciting the actual speech he gave at his brother’s wedding. But, the personal monologue seemed to backfire and instead, “slightly sickened them,” according to Grant.
He did get the part in the end, somehow, and gives credit to the lack of suitable male leads exclaiming, “I don’t think they could find anyone else!”
Oh Hugh, we’re sure that’s not the case.
You can watch the entire interview on the upcoming episode of The Graham Norton Show, airing Saturday, October 11. Emma Thompson and Luke Evans join Grant on the couch.
Grant can be seen in the The Rewrite, hitting U.K. theaters on October 8. The film follows a discouraged Hollywood screenwriter (Grant), who begrudgingly moves to the East Coast for a teaching position. He’s not too keen on his new place in life, and tells his students he’s in town researching a role.
