Hugh Bonneville and Dominic Cooper are to star in The Gold, a true-crime drama series about the infamous Brink's-Mat robbery of 1983.
Jack Lowden, Charlotte Spencer, Tom Cullen, Emun Elliott, Sean Harris, Ellora Torchia and Stefanie Martini will also star in the six-part series, according to BBC Media Centre.
The Brink's-Mat Robbery has gone down in history because of the enormity of what was stolen, but also because of the fortuitous circumstances in which it happened. When six armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport on November 26, 1983, they were expecting to steal around £3.2 million in cash. But they actually happened upon around £26 million in gold bullion, diamonds, and cash, making their robbery the largest in world history at the time.
The Gold will be directed by Aneil Karia, who recently won an Oscar for The Long Goodbye, the short film he made with Riz Ahmed and Lawrence Gough, who has previously directed several episodes of Doctor Who. Neil Forsyth (Guilt) is writing the series, which is a co-production between the BBC and Paramount+. Filming is already underway.
Tommy Bulfin, the BBC's Commissioning Editor, said in a statement: "The fact that we have assembled such a talented and exciting ensemble cast is testament to Neil’s incisive interrogation of one of the most infamous robberies in British history and the remarkable events which came in its wake. And to have the brilliant Aneil Karia join fresh from his Oscar win is the icing on the cake."
