Gretchen Mol Among Cast of New George R.R. Martin Adaptation 'Nightflyers'

We found out yesterday (January 4) we've definitely got a really long wait before the final season of Game of Thrones airs, but thankfully there's some comfort for George R. R. Martin fans.

Syfy has officially picked up Nightflyers, a new TV series based on his 1980 novella of the same name that was, incidentally, adapted into a 1987 sci-fi movie.

It tells the story of "The Nightflyer," a ship traveling to the edge of our solar system in the hopes of contacting alien life, and its passengers and crew, who start to suspect one another when some terrifying and violent things happen.

Okay, so Westeros it ain't, but, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the new series is set to star a similarly impressive cast. It'll be made up of well-known faces such as Boardwalk Empire's Gretchen Mol, alongside relative newcomers like Eoin Macken (Merlin), David Ajala (Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship), and Sam Strike (Mindhunter and, er, EastEnders).

Martin is unlikely to be involved in the show day-to-day, as he's frantically scribbling The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in the book series that inspired Game of Thrones, so that it can be published before the final season airs.

Not only that, but he's also currently presiding over the development of not one, but FIVE, GoT prequels, so don't anticipate the end of his influence on the small screen just yet.

Are you ready for Game of Thrones in space?
